Michelle Fonville: Georgia Nail Salon Charged Woman More For Being Overweight – Michelle Fonville went in to her local nail salon in Georgia expecting to be pampered and taken care of. Unfortunately, a nice manicure is not the only thing she received that day.

The salon owner also told Fonville that because she was overweight, she needed to pay an extra $5 to help cover the cost of damage done to the salon chairs by overweight patrons that sat in them. Fonville was outraged and told the salon owner that she was being discriminatory. “I said, ‘Ma’am, you can’t charge me $5 more. That’s discrimination because of my weight.’”

The salon owner responded by bringing up the issue of the broken chair, and said, “Do you think that’s fair when we take $24 [for manicure and pedicure] and we have to pay $2,500? Is that fair? No.”

Interestingly enough, the salon chairs that were in question were only designed to hold a capacity of 200 pounds, seemingly setting the salon up to discriminate in the beginning.

Fonville is spreading the word about her humiliating experience, saying, “The word has to get out there that these people are discriminating against us because of our weight. I mean come on, we’re in America. You can’t do that.”
